Section 3
The room smells sterile, a mix of disinfectant and fresh linens. I lay in the hospital bed, the weight of silence pressing down on me. My hands tremble slightly as I cradle the tiny bundle beside me, a fragile reminder of everything that went wrong.
A nurse enters, her soft smile bringing a flicker of warmth. “How are you feeling?” she asks, adjusting the IV drip.
I stare at the wall, struggling to find words. “I don’t know. I keep thinking… about Ethan. About us.”
She nods knowingly. “It’s tough, isn’t it? Sometimes, relationships shift during such critical moments.”
<p“I just… I feel unheard. Like my needs don’t matter,” I whisper, my voice cracking.
The nurse leans closer, concern etched on her face. “You deserve to feel valued, not overlooked. Have you considered how he treats you outside of these circumstances?”
I blink back tears. “I don’t know. He dismisses me. It’s like I don’t exist.”
“Those feelings are significant. There are signs of emotional abuse, which can be subtle but damaging. It’s important to recognize them.”
Her words reverberate through my mind, planting seeds of doubt. Could I really be in a situation like that? I nod slowly, feeling the walls of my heart close in. “I need to think about this.”
Section 4
A few days pass. I’m home now, but the air feels thick with lingering uncertainty. I’m rocking the baby, lost in thought when I hear Ethan’s voice drifting from the other room. He’s on the phone, too far for me to catch every word, but the tone makes my stomach twist.
“I never wanted this,” he says, the bitterness in his voice cutting through the air. “The pregnancy was a burden, Mom. I don’t know how I can handle it.”
Heart racing, I press my ear against the wall, each word hitting like a punch. I can’t believe what I’m hearing. How could he say that? My breath quickens, and my hands tremble as I struggle to hold the swaddled baby in my arms.
When he finally enters the living room, I confront him, my voice shaking with anger and betrayal. “How could you talk about our baby like that? You don’t get to say it was a burden!”
His eyes narrow, but I don’t back down. “You left me when I needed you the most. And now, I find out you don’t even want to be a father?”
“This is about my mother’s health, Rebecca! You don’t understand the pressure I’m under!” He paces, frustration spilling from him like boiling water.
“No, you don’t understand! You’ve been more concerned about your mother than about us!” I can feel the tears forming, a swell of emotion breaking through my defenses. “I can’t do this alone.”
“So what? You’ll just leave?” He scoffs, the dismissiveness stinging like a slap.
“Maybe I should!” I shout, the weight of my sorrow erupting in the air between us. “You’re not the man I thought you were!”
He crosses his arms, an impenetrable wall. “You’re overreacting.”
With my heart pounding and uncertainty swirling, I take a step back. “I don’t know if I can stay in this anymore.”
Just then, the doorbell rings, shattering the tense silence. Ethan shoots me a confused look, and I feel a knot of dread form in my stomach.
The door swings open, and to my horror, police officers stand in the doorway, their expressions serious and unyielding. I glance at Ethan, whose face drains of color. “What’s going on?” he stammers, confusion morphing into panic.
As they step inside, the chaos of our lives unfolds before me, and I can only wonder what will happen next.
