Part 5
After the party, the message from an unknown number clung to me like a shadow. “I know what you did.” The words echoed in my mind, twisting my stomach into knots. Had someone seen me with Vanessa? Was my past creeping up, ready to haunt me?
As I lay awake next to Vanessa, her soft breathing a reminder of how far I had come, doubt gnawed at me. Did she really love me, or was I just a stepping stone to her own success? I studied her as she slept, the golden glow of the bedside lamp painting her face in warmth, but a chill washed over me.
“Julian, you’re so much better than the life you had.”
Her words rang in my ears, but I felt the weight of my past burdening me. What did I sacrifice for this fantasy? I longed for the stability and comfort of my life with Camila, but the fear of losing everything held me captive.
In a moment of reckless impulse, I decided to visit Camila. The sight of our old home still made my heart ache, but I needed to see her, to know how she was surviving without me. When I knocked, the door swung open, revealing a warmth that felt foreign yet inviting.
“Julian?” Camila’s eyes widened, and for the briefest moment, her surprise morphed into something deeper. A mix of resentment and pity.
“Can I come in?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
She hesitated but stepped aside, allowing the past to seep into the present. The living room, once filled with our laughter, now felt like a shrine to what I had wrecked.
“Things are different now,” she said softly, as if reading my thoughts.
As we talked, I noticed the spring in her step, the light in her eyes. How was she thriving when I was falling apart? The more we spoke, the more my heart sank. Every smile she gave felt like a dagger to my soul. I was the ghost haunting her happiness.
“I’m happy, Julian. I hope you are too,” she said, and the sincerity in her voice was unbearable.
With every laugh we shared, I felt my own emptiness grow. I craved the life we had fought for together, yet I was chained to the fantasy I had built with Vanessa.
Part 6
The next day, a confrontation erupted like thunder in my mind. I had to know the truth about Vanessa’s baby, the one I thought was mine. My heart raced as I confronted her over brunch.
“Vanessa, can we talk about the baby?”
She put down her fork, her expression shifting from surprise to fear. “What do you mean?”
I leaned in closer, voice trembling. “Is the baby really mine?”
Her eyes darted around the café, scanning for eavesdroppers. “How could you even ask that?” she shot back, a hint of anger threading her words. But beneath her bravado, I could see the cracks forming.
“Please, just tell me the truth,” I pressed, desperate as the air thickened between us.
Vanessa took a deep breath, her facade crumbling. “Julian, I…” Her voice faltered.
Before she could finish, the realization hit like a freight train. “It’s not my child, is it?”
Her silence screamed louder than any admission. My stomach dropped as the pieces fell into place, sharp and unforgiving. The fantasies I had chased were built on lies. Vanessa had used me for my success, and the child—the child was a remnant of her past, not a future we would share.
“I can explain!” she stammered, panic flickering in her eyes.
“Don’t,” I whispered, the world around me spinning. The glittering life I had chosen was nothing but a mirage.
I stumbled outside, gasping for breath. My heart raced as I fumbled for my phone. I had to call Camila. I needed help, an anchor in this storm of betrayal. My fingers trembled as I dialed her number.
“Julian?”
Her voice was a lifeline, but just as quickly as I felt renewed hope, a message interrupted my thoughts: “The number you are calling is not available.”
My heart sank. I was lost in a reality I no longer recognized, the fantasy collapsing around me like a house of cards. Desperation clawed at my throat. I had thrown away everything for a lie, and now, standing on the precipice of my own making, I felt the weight of my choices crush me.
