Uncovering the Truth
Iris paced her room, glancing at her phone as the unknown number flashed across the screen. Was it a prank? Or a chance to dig deeper? The text had been vague, but it felt like a lifeline. “Your mother has something to tell you,” it read, igniting a spark of determination.
With a shaky breath, she clicked on her laptop. The first email search yielded nothing, but the second brought up a thread that made her heart race. It was addressed to a lawyer, discussing the house and its ownership. “I intended to transfer it to Iris. It’s what she deserves,” her mother’s message echoed.
But almost immediately, there was another email from her mother, sent shortly after: “They’re pressuring me to change my mind. I can’t let this ruin our family.”
“What have they done to you, Mom?”
Every click revealed more unsettling truths. Her mother’s sacrifices, the love buried under layers of manipulation by Derek and Melissa. With each line, the rage inside Iris ignited. She felt a mix of sadness and anger—her mother, afraid to take back what was rightfully hers.
“I need proof,” she whispered, her fingers flying over the keyboard. She began gathering screenshots, documenting every piece of evidence. If Derek and Melissa thought they could keep controlling her mother, they were in for a wake-up call.
Confrontations and Ultimatums
The next day, Iris found herself face to face with Melissa in the sunlit kitchen. The smell of fresh coffee filled the air, but the tension was suffocating. “I need to talk to you about the emails,” Iris said, trying to keep her voice steady.
Melissa’s smile faded, replaced by a guarded expression. “What emails?”
“The ones discussing the house ownership. You can’t deny it, Melissa. Mom was coerced.”
“That’s rich coming from you,” Melissa shot back, crossing her arms. “You weren’t even here to help her.”
Iris felt her heartbeat quicken. “You’re manipulating her, and I won’t let you continue.”
“You should stay out of family matters, Iris,” Melissa warned, her eyes narrowing. “Or there will be consequences.”
Something cold and sharp darted through Iris. She turned away, breathing heavily, but she could feel Melissa’s gaze drilling into her back. The pressure was mounting; her resolve hardened as she gathered financial records from their parents, hoping to pull back the curtain on Derek’s deceit.
Just as she felt ready to confront Derek, anger churning in her gut, she heard the door bang open. Derek sauntered in with a smug grin. “What’s this nonsense about emails?” he asked, feigning ignorance.
“You know exactly what I’m talking about,” Iris snapped. “I’m done playing your games.”
“Games?” His voice dripped with incredulity. “You think this is a game?”
“You’ve been embezzling money from Mom and Dad, haven’t you?” The words tumbled out before she could filter them, her heart pounding in her throat.
For a moment, Derek’s expression faltered, surprise twisting into anger. “How dare you accuse me! This is just a family trying to survive.”
“Survive? By taking everything from Mom and lying to her?”
His retort hung in the air, each word a threat. “You don’t know what you’re getting into, Iris. I won’t let you ruin this. You’re going to regret poking your nose into my affairs.”
Just as Iris prepared to drop the evidence on him, Melissa stepped in, her voice icy. “Iris, you should listen to your brother. You don’t want to see what happens when family matters turn ugly.”
