I Came Home to a Party and Discovered My Wife Wasn’t the Only One Who’d Been Left Behind

Section 5

The chaos in the living room was palpable as the police officer stepped forward, badge glinting under the crystal chandelier. “Adrian Vance?” He called out, his voice cutting through the raucous chatter. Guests paused mid-toast, glasses suspended in mid-air, eyes darting toward me.

“What’s the meaning of this?” I felt the heat of a hundred stares, each one piercing through the façade I had built. Maren’s face was a mask of shock, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.

“You’re being accused of financial misconduct.”

The officer’s words hung in the air, heavy and suffocating. My heart raced as I searched for Maren in the sea of bewildered faces. “What? By whom?”

“Your wife.” The officer’s gaze was unwavering, confident. He probably didn’t realize how much those words stung. I could feel the betrayal seep into my bones, chilling me to the core.

“This isn’t happening,” I whispered, the room spinning around me. I took a step back, needing to retreat from the weight of her betrayal, yet finding myself trapped amid the gathering crowd.

Maren stood rooted, eyes wide and unblinking as if my anger might ignite the flames of her own guilt. “Adrian, please, let me explain—”

“Explain what? How you threw me under the bus?” My voice erupted, drawing gasps and murmurs from the guests. “What’s your story, Maren? That I dared to succeed?”

“It’s not like that!” she pleaded, but her voice wavered, and I could see the cracks forming in her composed exterior.

“You twisted everything! You manipulated Vivian, you manipulated me—why?”

“Because you left me!”

Her voice rose, cutting through the murmurs, and suddenly everyone was watching, waiting for the truth to unfold. “You’ve changed, Adrian. I wanted to feel something — anything — in this house!”

The officer cleared his throat, the tension not shifting as he held up a piece of paper. “I need you to come with me, Mr. Vance.”

This was it. My world was crumbling, and yet, beneath the weight of impending doom, a flicker of clarity ignited within me. “You think this will save you, don’t you?” I shot back. “Accusing me won’t change your own recklessness.”

As I was escorted through the throngs of guests, I could feel their eyes, the whispers, the judgment. The betrayal was now public. I had to fight, but the ground was shifting beneath me.

Later, while the police processed me outside, a maelstrom of thoughts swirled in my head. I had to regain control. The urgent need to uncover the truth drove me back into the house, away from the curious glances.

Dominic stood guard outside, but I pushed past him, racing up the staircase. My eyes landed on our bedroom door, and I ripped it open with determination. I had to find something—anything—that could clear my name.

Frantically, I rifled through drawers, tossing aside clothing and personal items. It felt like delving into a grave, unearthed skeletons waiting to be found. Then, tucked behind a row of shoes, I spotted a battered notebook. My heart raced as I pulled it out.

Flipping through the pages, my pulse quickened. Figures danced across the paper—numbers and names that made sense and yet didn’t. Then I stumbled upon entries that felt like a punch to the gut: transactions, misappropriations, a web of deceit forged in my own home.

“No. No, no!”

It was all there: Maren had been embezzling funds from my business for years. With each new line I read, betrayal morphed into a visceral, choking rage.

“This is how you planned it?” I shouted into the empty room, but the walls only echoed my anguish back at me. She’d been framing me—the perfect cover for her own misconduct. All the late nights, the feigned confusion, the victim act. It had all been a mask.

Dread pooled in my stomach as the realization dawned. My wife, the woman I had trusted with my life, had orchestrated my downfall. It wasn’t just my career at stake; the truth ripped apart the very foundation of our lives.

“Maren!”

My voice cracked as it tore through the silence, but I was met with nothing but the haunting echoes of betrayal. I stood frozen, enveloped by the gravity of my loss. The woman I adored was a stranger, a thief masquerading in my home.

As the weight of despair settled like a blanket over me, I knew I was standing on the precipice of everything I had built crumbling into dust. I was alone, facing a world that had been turned against me by the very one who was supposed to stand by my side.
