Confrontation in the Kitchen
“Adrian… you’re home already,” Maren stammered, her voice barely rising above the clamor of laughter and chatter from the party below. She backed away from the steel counter, the wet sponge slipping from her fingers. “We were only… Vivian wanted to help. She wasn’t feeling well…”
“Enough, Maren.”
The calm behind those words echoed through the kitchen, a chilling silence falling over us. I stared into her eyes, searching for something — remorse, perhaps? But all I saw was a flicker of fear.
“You know how much this means to me,” she insisted, her tone defensive. “I was trying to keep everything together. It’s what you’d want, right?”
“What I want is to come home to my wife, not a circus act.”
The words hung heavy in the air. I turned my gaze to Vivian, who was shrinking further into herself, the sponge now uselessly floating in the sink. “Vivian, you don’t have to do this.”
“I was trying to finish before you got home. They said you wanted everything spotless,” she whispered, her voice cracking, tears glistening in her eyes.
“They lied to you.”
I wrapped my arms around her, not caring that the soapy water soaked through my suit. She leaned into me, the tension of months spilling over as she buried her face in my shoulder. “I’m so sorry,” I murmured, guilt washing over me. “I never wanted this for you.”
Faye rushed into the hallway, breathless. “Adrian, please, listen!”
I didn’t look at her as I carried Vivian upstairs, my heart heavy with the weight of betrayal. “I’m going to fix this,” I promised her softly. But a gnawing doubt lingered—how deep did Maren’s lies run?
The Gathering Storm
Once in the guest suite, I set Vivian down gently, locking eyes with her. “Stay here,” I said, my voice firm. “I’ll deal with this.”
The grand living room was a spectacle of opulence, laughter echoing against the marble floors as I entered. The guests, oblivious to the chaos, filled their glasses and traded stories, blissfully unaware of the storm brewing.
I cleared my throat, the noise dimming as I raised my voice, steady and unnerving. “Everyone, I need your attention.”
Whispers circled, eyes darting toward me with curiosity. “I just came from the kitchen where my wife and another woman were scrubbing dishes while you all celebrated.”
A ripple of disbelief passed through the crowd, some exchanging awkward glances. I took a breath, continuing, “Vivian was left to manage while Maren played hostess, pretending everything is fine.”
“She’s been manipulating the situation to maintain appearances.”
The truth hung like a guillotine, and I could see Maren’s face tighten as the reality set in. “This is not about keeping up a façade; it’s about loyalty and respect.”
As I searched the faces in the room, I felt the weight of their judgment. Would they stand with me, or would they side with her? Just then, my phone buzzed in my pocket, cutting through the tension like a knife. I glanced down at the screen, heart racing as I read the message: “We need to talk. They’ve been watching you. -J.”
“Who’s J?” I muttered under my breath, confusion racing through my mind.
“Adrian?” Maren stepped forward, but I silenced her with a sharp look, my thoughts churning. Who had been watching? What did this mean for me?
Before I could process further, my focus shifted back to the guests. “I need to address something crucial. This party is a distraction.”
“You’re making a scene,” Maren hissed, her desperation palpable.
But I couldn’t stop now. “I’m done pretending. And if anyone here has a problem with that—”
Just as I was about to sever ties with Maren publicly, my phone buzzed once more, breaking my concentration. I glanced at it and felt the ground shift beneath me.
A connection between the party and a business rival suddenly materialized in my mind, a chilling realization creeping in. What was really happening here?
