Confronting the Past
I knocked, the sound echoing in the stillness, and then the door swung open. There she was, Mara, frozen in shock, her eyes widening as they met mine. It felt like a punch to the gut, her presence both familiar and foreign.
“Mark?” she whispered, disbelief lacing her voice.
I lifted the document, crinkling it in my fist. “You know why I’m here,” I said, my throat dry. “This—this is about them.”
The tension coiled between us like a taut wire. “What are you even doing here?” Her voice trembled, but her gaze hardened.
“I deserve an explanation. This document,” I held it up, “gives me legal rights—rights you’ve stripped away. What’s going on, Mara?”
Her eyes flicked to the paper, then back to me. “You don’t understand…” she began, but her words drifted into the air, heavy and unresolved.
“No, you don’t get to backtrack now! You left me—left our daughters! Explain this!” I stepped closer, my heart racing with anger and desperation.
She opened her mouth, uncertainty pooling in her eyes, but the words eluded her. The silence stretched, taut as the wire between us, until she finally said, “You don’t know the whole story.”
Revelations
Before I could respond, my phone buzzed fiercely in my pocket, shattering the moment. Glancing down, I saw my mother’s name flash on the screen, a tight knot forming in my chest.
“Can we focus?” I said, irritation creeping into my voice.
Mara stared at me, her expression unreadable. “You should probably answer that.”
I hesitated but pulled the phone out, my heart pounding. The message preview sent a chill down my spine: “Mark, I’ve been keeping an eye on things. You need to be careful. I know more than I’ve let on.”
My mother knew.
My pulse quickened. “What do you mean, know more?” I shot back, my voice rising, demanding answers. “You’ve been watching her?”
Mara stood silent, her face pale, watching me as I tried to process everything. My mother’s protective instincts began to feel like a threat. Was she aware of Mara’s plans all along?
Another message dinged, but I couldn’t focus. The air was thick with tension. “Talk to me, Mara. You owe me that much!”
She opened her mouth, but for a moment, it felt like she couldn’t find the words. I couldn’t look away. My heart raced between fear and anger. Then, just as she took a deep breath, I noticed a flicker of uncertainty cross her face.
“Mark, I—”
My phone buzzed again, but it was too late.
