Conversations in Disguise
“That one looks interesting,” Santiago said, gesturing toward the rose gold watch as Valeria placed it on the velvet base.
She looked at him with genuine interest, her eyes sparkling. “This model is one of our finest. Handcrafted in Querétaro, only 82 pieces made. It’s more than a watch; it’s a story.”
“A story? About what?” Santiago leaned in, curiosity ignited.
“About hard work and dedication. In a place like this, it’s easy to forget what we value. Customers often care more about the price than the artistry behind it.”
Her voice softened, and her smile faded slightly. “But sometimes, it feels like we’re invisible, working hard while the wealthy get all the praise.”
Santiago could see the truth in her words. “You must get a lot of entitled customers then?”
“Entitled, yes. And often rude. I wish they could see us for who we are, not just for what we sell.”
Fernanda’s laughter pierced through the air again, a mocking sound that seemed to hang in the room. “As if they’d care,” she sneered, rolling her eyes dramatically. “They’re here for the prestige, not the people.”
Santiago’s heart sank. Valeria’s posture shifted slightly, her confidence flickering under the weight of Fernanda’s scorn. “But that’s the real problem,” Santiago said, feeling a swell of protectiveness for her. “Maybe it’s time we change that.”
“You really think one person can make a difference?” Valeria’s gaze bore into him, searching for sincerity.
“Absolutely. Especially someone like you,” Santiago replied earnestly. “Your passion deserves to be seen, Valeria.”
Her smile returned, just a glimmer, but it made his heart race. Here was a woman who found beauty and dignity in her work, despite the disrespect around her. Yet, he couldn’t shake the nagging feeling about the contrast. How had he never noticed this before?
Back to Reality
The next morning, Santiago donned the same old gray t-shirt and worn jeans, the disguise now feeling oddly like armor. He stepped into the store again, a familiar anxiety building in his chest.
“Back again?” Fernanda’s voice dripped with condescension. “Hope you’re not here to waste more of our time.”
He shrugged, acting nonchalant. “Just browsing.”
Valeria approached with her usual grace, a spark of recognition in her eyes. “Good morning, sir! Looking for something special today?”
Santiago forced a bashful smile. “Just wanted to look, not buy today.”
Fernanda scoffed. “Well, we can’t all afford to just browse,” she said loudly enough for others to hear, her disdain palpable.
“Everyone deserves respect,” Valeria interjected firmly, surprising both him and Fernanda.
Santiago felt a warmth of admiration for her. “Exactly,” he added, attempting to match her conviction.
But as he stood there, he couldn’t shake the feeling of unease. He glanced around the shop, noticing the uneasy exchanges between the staff. Something was brewing beneath the surface.
Hearing a muffled voice from the manager’s office, he inched closer, his heart pounding in his chest. “I’ll have to cut some positions,” the manager said, voice steady and cold. “Valeria’s role is at risk, along with others who don’t pull their weight.”
Santiago’s stomach sank. He couldn’t let that happen—not to Valeria.
“We need to keep the best and lose the dead weight,” the manager continued, unaware of Santiago’s presence. “Those who don’t belong will have to go.”
As the manager’s words hung in the air, Santiago felt a rush of determination. I have to protect her. I have to do something. The realization settled in—it was time to take a stand.
