Vitamin D: Boosting Immune Health and Hormone Production
Vitamin D is more than a sunshine vitamin; it plays a direct role in the immune system and in the production of thyroid hormones. When your levels are low, the thyroid may struggle to convert the inactive form of hormone (T4) into the active form (T3), which can worsen symptoms of hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s. Selenium: Supporting Thyroid Enzyme Function
Selenium is a trace mineral essential for the activity of the enzyme iodothyronine deiodinase, which converts T4 into the more active T3. This conversion is crucial for maintaining a steady metabolic rate. In people with Hashimoto’s, selenium also helps reduce the production of thyroid‑targeting antibodies.
Why it matters: Low selenium status has been linked to increased inflammation and a higher risk of progressing from subclinical to overt hypothyroidism. Supplementing can lower thyroid peroxidase (TPO) antibodies in many patients, meaning less autoimmune attack on the gland.
How to get enough: Brazil nuts are a natural powerhouse—just one to two nuts provide the recommended 55 µg daily intake. If nuts aren’t your thing, a supplement of 100–200 µg per day is typical. Choose a selenomethionine form for better absorption.
Mistake to avoid: Selenium has a narrow therapeutic window. Chronic intake above 400 µg can cause selenosis, leading to hair loss, nail brittleness, and gastrointestinal upset. Stick to the recommended dose and avoid multiple supplements that contain selenium.
