Starting Over
Tanesha Richards gripped the edge of her sofa, her heart hammering in her chest. Today marked the first day in her new apartment, a space she hoped would be a sanctuary. Yet, instead of relief, she felt a weight of paranoia pressing down on her.
“It’s just a matter of time before he finds me,” she murmured, glancing through the window blinds, half-expecting to see Bruce lurking below. The sun streamed in, but its warmth felt unnerving, like it was mocking her sense of safety.
“Tanesha, you’re safe here. I promise,” Lily said, unloading boxes with a comforting smile. “This place is ours now.”
Tanesha tried to smile back, but anxiety twisted her stomach. “What if he knows where I am? What if he follows me?”
Lily paused, her brow furrowing. “We’ll figure this out together. Just focus on unpacking.”
They spent hours transforming the apartment into something resembling home. But every noise—a car passing by, a door slamming—sent Tanesha’s heart racing. She caught herself looking over her shoulder every few minutes, searching for a shadow that wasn’t there.
“You’re not alone,” Lily reassured her, setting a picture frame on the mantelpiece. “I’m here, and I’m not going anywhere.”
Tanesha nodded, though it felt like a lie. “I just wish I could shake this dread. I want my life back.”
As evening approached, she stood in the small kitchen, her hands trembling as she poured a glass of water. The silence felt deafening, each tick of the clock echoing Bruce’s name in her mind. “What if he’s already found me?”
A Chilling Message
That night, as Tanesha lay in bed, a sudden beep from her phone shattered the stillness. She squinted at the screen, her breath caught in her throat when she saw the unknown number. “No, not now,” she whispered, heart racing. She almost ignored it but felt drawn to the faint glimmer of danger.
“Who is it?” she muttered aloud, glancing at the door as though it would answer.
With a shaky breath, she opened the message. Her stomach dropped. “I see you,” it read, followed by an emoji of a pair of eyes.
Panic surged through her veins. “Lily!” she cried, scrambling for her phone. Her hands fumbled as she dialed her friend’s number, praying she would pick up.
“Tanesha? What’s wrong?” Lily’s voice was steady, a lifeline in her turmoil.
“I think it’s him! I think Bruce found me,” she stammered, her words tumbling out in a frantic rush.
“I’m on my way,” Lily replied without hesitation. The line went dead, but Tanesha could already feel the crushing isolation close in around her.
She paced her dimly lit apartment, the shadows seeming to shift and sway as her thoughts spiraled. “What if he’s right outside?” The chilling message replayed in her mind, echoing like a taunting melody. “I see you.”
As the minutes dragged on, every creak of the floorboards sent a jolt of fear coursing through her. She imagined Bruce’s face, a frightening blend of anger and obsession. What did he want from her? Was he really watching?
Finally, she heard a knock at the door. “Tanesha, it’s me!” Lily called out, her voice a soothing balm. Tanesha flung the door open and collapsed into her friend’s arms, feeling safe just for a moment.
“What’s going on?” Lily asked, rushing inside, scanning the room as if expecting an intruder.
Tanesha handed her the phone, her hands shaking. “This came from an unknown number. I’m terrified, Lily. I can’t do this anymore.”
Lily read the message, her expression shifting from concern to fierce determination. “We need to go to the police. This is serious.”
“What if they can’t help me?” Tanesha’s voice trembled. She felt exposed, vulnerable. “What if Bruce has already found a way to get to me?”
“We’ll figure it out together. But first, we need to keep you safe,” Lily said. “Let’s go through your things, make sure everything is secure.”
As they began to sift through the boxes, Tanesha’s heart raced at every sound outside. Suddenly, the doorbell rang again. “Who could that be?”
Tanesha hesitated and glanced at Lily, confusion and dread swirling in her stomach. With a carefully measured breath, she walked to the door and peered through the peephole. A package sat on the ground, unmarked and ominous.
“What’s that?” Lily whispered, her eyes widening in fear.
Tanesha’s heart dropped. “I don’t know,” she replied, her voice barely above a whisper. “But only Bruce would know these items.”
