Confronting Julian
“Who did this to you?” I pressed, my voice barely a whisper against the thundering pulse in my ears. The sight of her bruises sent a wave of nausea crashing over me.
My mother’s eyes darted toward the door. “Julian ties me to the bed whenever I ask about my bank accounts,” she managed, a tremor in her voice that shattered my heart.
I swallowed hard, masking the rage that boiled beneath my skin. I had to know more, but I also needed to confront Julian before I crumbled. My fists clenched at my sides as I walked out of the bathroom, the air thick with a silence that felt like a warning.
When I found Julian in the living room, he was leaning back casually on the couch, a beer in hand, laughter spilling from his lips as he shared a joke with Chloe. They turned to me, and for a moment, their smiles dropped, morphing into something more predatory.
<p“Hey, sis! How’s Mom doing?” Julian asked, feigning concern that only made my skin crawl.
“I saw her bruises,” I said, my voice steady despite the knot tightening in my stomach. “You’re hurting her.”
Julian scoffed, waving a dismissive hand. “Her memory isn’t what it used to be. You know that.”
“Don’t play games with me, Julian. I’m not blind or deaf.”
Chloe chimed in, her voice laced with venom. “Why don’t you focus on your career, like you always do? You left her in our hands.”
“I should’ve come sooner,” I shot back, my anger bubbling. “But you’re not the saint you make yourself out to be.”
Julian’s smile was cold, his eyes narrowing. “You think you can waltz in after abandoning your mother and tell me how to take care of her?”
“She’s my mother! You’re abusing her!” I felt the walls closing in, isolation swallowing me whole. It was clear: I couldn’t trust anyone here. Not him, and certainly not Chloe.
As I retreated to my room, I could hear their laughter resume behind me, a sound that echoed with mockery. It was suffocating, and I knew I had to find proof of their treachery. I wouldn’t let them win.
Searching for Evidence
The next morning, I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at the clutter of old photographs and dusty books. My mind raced. I had to gather evidence, something that would stand against Julian’s smokescreen.
When Julian and Chloe left for the grocery store, I wasted no time. My heart pounded as I entered their living room, every creak of the floorboards feeling like a siren call. I scanned the room until something caught my eye—a small cabinet, slightly ajar. Adrenaline surged through me.
Inside, I found a stack of envelopes addressed to various banks. My fingers trembled as I unfolded the top one, revealing statements with large withdrawals and transfers that led to unfamiliar accounts.
“What are you hiding, Julian?” I whispered to myself, my chest tightening as I snapped pictures of the documents with my phone. My mind raced through the implications. This was more than just money; it was control.
Just as I thought I had gathered enough evidence, I heard the front door creak open. Panic surged through me like ice water. I quickly ducked behind the couch, my heart thundering in my chest.
“Did you grab the special cat food?” Chloe’s voice carried from the hallway, devoid of concern.
“I’ll check the fridge,” Julian replied. “Then we can talk about her.”
My breath hitched. I strained to hear what they would say. I was drenched in fear, heart racing as their footsteps approached the living room.
Trapped, I held my breath, praying they wouldn’t look my way.
