The Confrontation
For several seconds, I couldn’t process his words. It felt surreal, as if I were watching a bad film and waiting for the credits to roll.
“You’re starting a life with her? Just like that?” My voice quivered, reflecting the chaos in my mind. “What about us?”
Grant shrugged, his eyes shifting away. “We weren’t working anymore, Meredith. You know that.”
My heart sank at the casual dismissal. “You’re telling me you solved it by emptying our account?”
“It wasn’t emptying. It was a transfer.” He leaned against the counter, exuding an unsettling calm, as though we were discussing the weather.
“A transfer to your mistress!” I yelled, feeling the walls of our home close in around me. “How many times have you seen her?”
“It doesn’t matter. What matters is that we’ve moved on.” His confidence pierced me like a knife.
“Moved on?” I felt the heat rising in my cheeks, a mix of rage and confusion. “You don’t just throw away our life like that! I worked hard for that money!”
“And I’m sure Camille and I will create something far better than whatever we had.” He flicked his wrist as though swatting away a fly, rendering my years of sacrifices irrelevant.
“You think this is over? You think I’m just going to stand by and let you do this?”
His face hardened for the first time. “What are you planning to do? Fight me? You’ll lose.”
Fear tightened my throat, but I couldn’t show weakness. “I won’t lose everything without a fight. Not to you or her.”
As I turned away, my mind raced. I needed to protect myself. I needed a plan.
Seeking Refuge
Emily opened the door, her smile fading as she saw my pale face. “Meredith? What happened?”
I stepped inside, the warmth of her home offering a stark contrast to the chill creeping through my bones. “It’s Grant. He… he emptied our savings. All of it.”
“What do you mean, emptied?” Her eyes widened, disbelief clouding her features. “How could he do that?”
“He’s starting a life with Camille,” I said, my voice breaking. “He transferred everything to her.”
“But how could he just…?” Emily shook her head in disbelief. “You have to fight him. You can’t let him get away with this.”
“What am I supposed to do? I never saw this coming.” My hands trembled as I gripped the edge of the counter for support.
Emily moved closer, her determination becoming palpable. “We’ll figure this out. You need to see a lawyer. There are ways to protect yourself.”
“A lawyer?” The word felt heavy. “What if he already has an advantage?”
“You have the proof of infidelity, right? You must gather everything—emails, texts. Build your case.”
As we strategized, I felt a flicker of hope. Maybe I could turn this nightmare around.
Suddenly, Emily’s phone buzzed, and she glanced at the screen. A frown replaced her earlier confidence.
“It’s Camille,” she muttered, her voice barely a whisper. “She’s texting me.”
My stomach dropped as I leaned closer, dread creeping in. “What does it say?”
Emily read aloud, “Hope you’re enjoying the time with your sister. I know where you are.”
In that instant, vulnerability washed over me. I felt exposed, as if the walls of my sister’s home were made of glass.
